Town of Greenburgh Board Honors Maria Regina HS as “Standard Bearer” in STEM Studies

The Town of Greenburgh Board recently honored Maria Regina with a Proclamation that cited the renowned all-female Catholic high school’s emergence as a “standard bearer in STEM studies among high schools nationally in the region.”

Paul Feiner, Greenburgh Supervisor, presented the official citation to representatives from the school during a ceremony held at Greenburgh Town Hall that preceded the regular Board meeting.  The group included Maria Carozza-McCaffrey (Class of ’99), Principal; Reena Varma, Science Department Chairperson and Science Olympiad Coach, Karen Lizzo, Math Department Chairperson and Science Olympiad Coach and Shelagh Amann, AP Computer Science and Business Teacher.

In addition, nine of Maria Regina’s outstanding science students attended: Leah Filippeli, Yonkers; Jillian Fox, Yonkers; Yeji Jeon, South Korea and White Plains; Lillian Hinsliff, Scarsdale; Elizabeth Hunt, Scarsdale; Gabriella Meyo, Bronx; Brooke Muto, Port Chester; Keitu Rankoe, Mount Vernon and Fiona Kelly, Dobbs Ferry.

Joining Feiner in celebrating Maria Regina were Council members Joy HaberEllen HendrickxGina Jackson and Francis Sheehan;

Among the notable achievements detailed in the Proclamation:

●       Maria Regina positioned itself at the forefront of STEM by engaging young women in research, high-level technology and hands-on participation in scientific projects and through partnerships with international research organizations, comprehensive AP programs, and school-wide scientific competition

●       Made history as the first high school in the U.S. to participate in a European-Union-sponsored Ultrafast Physics Zoom Session to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM.

●       Hosted the first-ever Lower Hudson Valley South Division C Science Olympiad where the school’s aspiring scientists distinguished themselves as the top performing team from a Catholic high school; placed in the top 50% of all teams, alongside top private and public high schools in the surrounding area; captured two medals and scored in the top 10 in 6 additional events

●       Joined the elite ranks of high schools in the U.S. to earn the highly coveted 2025 Advanced Placement Honor Roll Platinum designation, the only high school within the Archdiocese of New York in Westchester and one of five public and private high schools in the county to attain the College Board’s highest distinction.

Greenburgh has long recognized and honored Maria Regina as a pillar of education in preparing young women for post-secondary success. The town comprises the Villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington and Tarrytown and several unincorporated areas.
