Maria Regina HS’s New Math Honor Society Chapter Triumphs at Math League Competition

Continuing its leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) studies, Maria Regina High School’s recently established Math Honor Society chapter of Mu Alpha Theta excelled in its third year participating in the Catholic Math League competition, capturing top honors in the category of Geometry.

Prior to the creation of Mu Alpha Theta, Maria Regina students had competed in the Catholic Math League competition in 2024 and 2025.

“The triumphs were very impressive this year with major wins both at the state and national levels,” declared Maria Carozza-McCaffrey (Class of ’99), Principal of the renowned all-girls Catholic high school, adding: “Considering Maria Regina’s chapter is less than a year old, our students’ outstanding performance was truly remarkable, one that establishes Maria Regina as a major player in this highly competitive league.  We congratulate them for setting a record for themselves and their school.”

Among the kudos Maria Regina’s geometry wizards captured were:

●       Maria Regina was the top-performing high school in New York State (out of 13 other Catholic high school chapters that vied for the top honor)

●       Maria Regina ranked 7th nationally among 41 high schools.

In addition, Maria Regina’s first-time league contenders nabbed 5 of the top 10 spots in New York State, finishing in the top tier of the 156 students from across the state who participated.

The Maria Regina winners’ circle included:

●       Yeji Jeon, White Plains/South Korea, won first place in the Grade 11 category.  She also ranked 12th out of 436 participants nationally.

●       Madison Ramirez, Bronx, who won 2nd place, Grade 11.

●       Keitumetse Rankoe, Mt. Vernon, who took home 5th place, Grade 12

●       Aisha Muratovic, Yonkers, 6th place, Grade 10

●       Leah Filippelli, Yonkers, 9th place, Grade 11

Founded in 1997, the Catholic Math League is a national math competition designed to develop students’ test-taking skills for achievement tests and college entrance exams.

Maria Regina’s distinguished performance in the league’s 2026 competition is the latest chapter in the school’s acclaimed STEM program.  Last month, the Town of Greenburgh honored Maria Regina with a Proclamation that cited the school’s emergence as a “standard bearer in STEM studies among high schools nationally and in the region.”

Among the notable achievements detailed in the Proclamation:

●       Maria Regina positioned itself at the forefront of STEM by engaging young women in research, high-level technology, and hands-on participation in scientific projects, and through partnerships with international research organizations, comprehensive AP programs, and school-wide scientific competition

●       Made history as the first high school in the U.S. to participate in a European Union-sponsored Ultrafast Physics Zoom Session to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM.

●       Hosted the first-ever Lower Hudson Valley South Division C Science Olympiad, where the school’s aspiring scientists distinguished themselves as the top-performing team from a Catholic high school; placed in the top 50% of all teams, alongside top private and public high schools in the surrounding area; captured two medals and scored in the top 10 in 6 additional events

●       Joined the elite ranks of high schools in the U.S. to earn the highly coveted 2025 Advanced Placement Honor Roll Platinum designation, the only high school within the Archdiocese of New York in Westchester and one of five public and private high schools in the county to attain the College Board’s highest distinction.
