Second graders at Midland School recently took to the stage to perform “Beyond the Backyard Fence.” The beloved production – written more than two decades ago by second grade teacher Ruthann Olsen – continues to be a cherished tradition that brings the school community together.
In addition to Olsen’s original script, the music was composed by Andrew Raynor, a retired Rye City Schools music teacher. Each second grade teacher directs a portion of the show, helping to keep the performance fresh and relevant by incorporating modern touches – such as taking selfies, posting pictures onto Snapchat and seeing a DoorDash driver scoot across the stage.
“Just like in a community, there are no small roles in this play,” Olsen said. “We are so proud of our talented students and all the hard work they put into this production. Special thanks to our music teacher, Mrs. [Rita] Pisano, who worked so hard teaching our students all of the songs.”
