Plans this summer? Westchester County is now accepting applications for its Summer Volunteer Fellowship Program. The Program offers College and High School students with a behind-the-scenes look at how County Government functions, while providing them with the opportunity to gain professional experience, build leadership skills, and work closely with full-time government employees.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Opening doors for our young people is one of the most important investments we can make in our future. Our Summer Volunteer Fellowship Program gives students a hands-on experience in public service, while providing them with mentorship from experienced government professionals. I encourage every student who is eager to learn and grow to apply, and spend their summer helping us build a stronger Westchester for us all.”
Accepted summer fellows will research and prepare policy proposals, and in-depth analysis for a variety of topics to directly inform the County Executive’s Senior Team. Fellows will also be responsible for scheduling, organizing and facilitating a series of public-facing informational events, as well as studying legislation from comparable municipalities.
In the past, Fellows have identified and proposed legislation which later was adopted by Westchester County. Alumni of the program have gone on to work in a variety of governmental roles, with some moving on to work at Westchester County, and others in high-level roles in New York State government.
Scheduling is flexible, and remote work is allowed. Fellows are expected to work a minimum of three days a week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Recent college graduates, as well as high school seniors looking for a senior alternative between May and June are also encouraged to apply.
