In direct response to a growing national and regional demand for qualified educators, SUNY Westchester Community College (SUNY WCC) has officially announced the launch of its new Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS): Adolescence Education (Teacher Education Transfer) Associate Degree program. This comprehensive program features several specialized concentrations designed to prepare students for impactful careers teaching middle school and high school students (grades 7–12).
The introduction of the Adolescence Education program comes at a critical time for the American education system. According to the 2025 update by the Learning Policy Institute, the United States is facing a severe educator deficit, with approximately 411,549 teaching positions either remaining unfilled or being staffed by teachers who are not fully certified for their assignments—representing roughly 1 in 8 of all teaching positions nationwide. Furthermore, data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics highlights a massive ongoing market need, projecting an annual employment requirement of 106,700 new secondary education teachers, including 66,200 for high schools and 40,500 for middle schools, primarily to fill vacancies left by retiring or departing staff.
To help combat these numbers locally, SUNY WCC’s new program aligns its specialized concentrations with the critical shortage areas identified by New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) for grades 7 through 12, including English, History, Mathematics, and Spanish.

Structured under the college’s successful Teacher Education Transfer umbrella, the LAS: Adolescence Education program is built seamlessly for forward-transfer success. SUNY WCC already maintains robust transfer agreements for its Childhood Education track with prominent regional institutions—including CUNY Lehman College, Manhattanville University, Mercy University, Pace University, Sarah Lawrence College, SUNY Binghamton University, and SUNY Empire State University.
The college plans to expand these articulation agreements to include the new Adolescence Education pathway, opening immediate doors to lucrative bachelor’s and master’s degree opportunities. This includes advanced “2+2+1” program options at institutions like Mercy University and Sarah Lawrence College, allowing students to earn their associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in an accelerated timeframe.
With this launch, SUNY WCC positions itself as one of the few select regional community colleges offering a dedicated associate degree pathway tailored specifically to secondary teacher preparation.
