Third grade students at Dows Lane Elementary School are building a deeper understanding of fractions as part of Module 5 of the Eureka Math² program. During a recent lesson in Anthony Mancino’s class, the students reviewed fractions within one whole. They revisited key vocabulary, including numerator and denominator and discussed how the denominator tells how many equal parts make up the whole, while the numerator shows how many of those parts are being counted.
After strengthening this foundation, the students extended their learning by creating and labeling number lines with fractions greater than one. Using their prior knowledge, they continued the number line beyond 1 and correctly placed fractions such as 5/4 and 6/4. In true Irvington fashion, the third graders demonstrated courage as they applied what they already knew about fractions to explore a new concept.
“Throughout the lesson, the students were actively engaged in the learning process,” Mancino said. “They collaborated with partners to compare their number lines, discussed different strategies for counting fractional parts past one whole and checked each other’s thinking. Finally, they showed strong self-awareness by reflecting on how their understanding of fractions is growing and recognizing the progress they made in building confidence with fractions greater than one.”
The lesson reflected the principles of the Irvington Way – the district’s vision of supporting students to be courageous, collaborative, engaged and self-aware learners.
