The YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester is proud to celebrate Mary Anne Russo, Lakeland Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Director, who has been selected as a 2026 Early Education Hall of Heroes honoree by the Child Care Council of Westchester.
In her role, Mary Anne oversees four Lakeland Central School District Universal Pre-Kindergarten sites, supporting educators, children, and families across the district. Her leadership helps ensure that every child has access to high-quality early learning experiences in environments where they feel safe, valued, and inspired to grow.
The Hall of Heroes recognition honors individuals who make exceptional contributions to child care and afterschool programs. Selected from a large pool of nominees, Mary Anne will be recognized alongside 14 other leaders who are strengthening the foundation for youth and families throughout Westchester County.
“At the Y, we know that strong communities are built by dedicated leaders who care deeply about young people and their families,” said Margarita Pineiro, Director of Early Learning Child Care Services. “Mary Anne’s work across multiple school-based sites reflects her commitment to creating welcoming, nurturing spaces where every child can belong and thrive.”
A YMCA family shared, “We’ve had experiences at other preschools and daycares, and no one has met the level of professionalism, experience, and communication that Mary Anne and her team provide. I have really high expectations, and this program has far exceeded them.”
Mary Anne’s impact reflects the YMCA’s mission to strengthen community by connecting people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Through her leadership, she supports not only early learners, but also educators and families—helping build a stronger, more connected community.
